Some of the requirements to work in the UK include:
- All doctors wanting to practice in the UK are required to be registered and licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Full GMC registration and licensure enables doctors to work in any form of professional medical practice in the UK
- In order to take up a consultant post, doctors must also hold specialist registration
- Doctors will need to provide documentary evidence of their medical education and experience to support any application for the GMC registration

Tests required for the GMC registration
IELTS
Non European Economic Area candidates applying for registration must satisfy the GMC that they have the necessary knowledge of English.
Doctors will be required to prove that they have taken the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieved an overall score of 7, with minimum scores of 7 in speaking and 6 in listening, reading and writing. IELTS scores are valid for two years.
Matchworkers International has a bespoke in house service to provide this requirement.
PLAB
The GMC uses the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board Test (PLAB) test to ensure that international doctors have the basic medical competence and communication skills to practice in the United Kingdom.
Once doctors have completed the IELTS they will be encouraged to take the PLAB. The first part will be taken in their country of residence and the second part will be completed when they arrive in the United Kingdom.
Acceptable Postgraduate Qualifications Doctors may be exempt from PLAB requirements if they have completed certain postgraduate qualifications in the UK or Overseas that GMC accepts as sufficient evidence of a doctor’s knowledge and skill, for the purpose of a full registration with a license to practice medicine.
